The
outbreak of the Chinese Civil War made Hong Kong people
try hard to save every cent in this state of turmoil. Many families
had a sewing machine and most of the housewives were
good at needlework and could make all the clothes
for their family members.
At that time, only the rich could afford to
go to tailor shops, which explained why local garment
industry was almost died out in that period.
